When to call
Recognize the condition.
- A visible gap in a torsion spring
- A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift normally
- The opener lifts only a few inches or strains
- Loose cables or a suddenly heavy, uneven door
A spring failure affects more than one component
Springs counterbalance the door's weight; the opener is not intended to lift an unbalanced door as dead weight. Continued attempts can damage other components or leave the door in an unsafe position. Do not pull the emergency release on a raised, damaged door or try to lift it with helpers.
Torsion springs and extension springs use different arrangements. Describe the visible condition without touching the spring, brackets, drums or cables. If the door is open, keep people clear of the opening and tell the service team its position before an appointment is arranged.
Replacement should be matched to this door
The replacement spring specification depends on the actual door and lifting system. Appearance or paint color alone is not enough to select it. An inspection considers the door configuration, spring arrangement and the other components that transfer lifting force.
When a door uses two springs, ask whether the proposed replacement addresses their condition and compatibility as a pair. Similar age and wear can make replacement of both worth discussing, but the recommendation should be explained for this system rather than presented as an automatic rule for every door. Our documented work in Golden shows a completed dual-spring assembly.
Compare the complete spring service
Ask whether the estimate includes inspection of cables, drums, bearings, brackets, rollers and the opener connection, along with replacement and balance checks. Related damage and optional upgrades should be identified separately. If a high-cycle spring option is offered, request its specification and warranty conditions.
Ask about USA-made spring options for your door and how the origin and compatibility of the proposed part can be confirmed. Availability is component-specific. Final door movement and opener safety checks matter as much as the new spring itself; a heavier-duty label is not a substitute for correct sizing.

Spring repair: common questions
Can I open the door with a broken spring?
Do not attempt to force or manually lift a damaged, unbalanced door. Keep clear and let a trained technician determine how to secure it.
Should both springs be replaced?
Discuss condition, compatibility and similar wear on a paired system. The correct recommendation depends on the door and inspection.
How much will the repair cost?
Door configuration, spring specification, related damage and included labor affect the estimate. Confirm the service-call charge and request written pricing before approving work.
