“The garage door won’t work” can describe several different failures: the remote does nothing, the opener runs but the door does not move, the door rises a few inches and stops, or the door reaches the floor and reverses. The safest way to diagnose the problem is to identify the exact behavior before changing settings or pulling the release cord.

First, identify the exact symptom

  • No lights, sound, or movement: start with power, the wall control, and opener lock mode.
  • Wall button works but remote does not: check the remote battery, programming, range, and lock/vacation mode.
  • Opener runs but door does not move: the trolley may be disconnected or the drive system may have failed.
  • Door lifts only a few inches: a broken spring or badly unbalanced door may be overloading the opener.
  • Door will open but will not close: inspect the photo-eye safety system and the path of the door.
  • Door closes and immediately reverses: check for an obstruction, frozen seal, sensor issue, incorrect travel setting, or binding door.

Step 1: Check power and controls

  1. Confirm the opener is plugged into a working outlet and that the cord is intact.
  2. Check the garage circuit breaker or GFCI outlet. Reset it only if there is no sign of water, scorching, or damaged wiring.
  3. Try the wired wall control. If it works, replace the remote battery and check the opener manual for reprogramming instructions.
  4. Look for a lock or vacation indicator on the wall control. Lock mode can disable handheld remotes while leaving the wall button active.
  5. Verify that a manual slide lock on the door is not engaged before operating the opener.

If a breaker trips again

Do not keep resetting it. Repeated tripping can indicate an electrical problem, a failing opener, or excessive mechanical load. Disconnect the opener if safe and arrange diagnosis.

Step 2: Check the photo-eye safety sensors

Modern openers use a sending sensor and receiving sensor near the bottom of the tracks. If the beam is blocked or the sensors are misaligned, the opener may refuse to close the door or may reverse it. Some models flash the opener light or an indicator LED to report a sensor problem.

  1. Remove boxes, tools, leaves, cobwebs, snow, and other objects from the doorway and sensor beam.
  2. Wipe each lens gently with a clean, soft cloth.
  3. Check whether both indicator lights match the normal state described in the opener manual.
  4. Look for a sensor bracket that was bumped or a low-voltage wire that is visibly loose or damaged.

Never bypass the safety sensors

The photo eyes protect people, pets, vehicles, and property. Do not tape a wall button, hold a remote down from outside the garage, jumper wires, or move the sensors above their intended position to force the door closed.

Step 3: Look for obstructions, ice, and binding

Colorado weather can freeze the bottom seal to the floor or pack ice near the tracks. Clear loose snow and debris without prying against the door. Do not repeatedly run the opener against a frozen seal; the added load can damage the opener, top panel, or door hardware. Use a safe thawing method that will not damage the seal or create standing water that refreezes.

Also inspect the tracks from a distance for a bent section, displaced roller, or object in the path. Do not place hands inside the track or attempt to hammer a track back into position while the door is supported by it.

Step 4: Determine whether the problem is the door or the opener

Only perform a manual balance check when the door is fully closed and there is no visible spring, cable, track, roller, or panel damage. Turn off opener power and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the emergency release. Lift the door slowly using the designated handle—never a panel joint or cable.

  • If the door moves smoothly and stays controlled, the opener or its settings may need service.
  • If the door is extremely heavy, jerky, crooked, or will not stay at a partially open position, stop and reconnect it. The counterbalance or door hardware needs professional inspection.
  • If the door is open or partly open, do not pull the release cord unless a trained person has secured the door against falling.

Why the door reaches the floor and reverses

A closing door that reverses at the floor may be encountering resistance or reaching an incorrect travel limit. Check for ice, debris, a compressed or damaged bottom seal, and visible track binding. If the path is clear, the opener’s travel and force system should be checked according to its model-specific instructions. Excessive closing force is not a solution; it can defeat safe operation or conceal a binding door.

Problems that need a professional

  • A broken spring, loose or frayed cable, or cable off the drum.
  • A door that is crooked, off track, hanging, or stuck halfway.
  • An opener that strains because the door is heavy or unbalanced.
  • A cracked top section, bent track, damaged roller, or loose bottom bracket.
  • Safety sensors or auto-reversal that do not operate correctly after basic cleaning and alignment checks.
  • A motor that hums, grinds, smells hot, or repeatedly trips electrical protection.

What to tell the technician

Note whether the problem affects opening, closing, or both; whether the wall control and remote behave differently; what the opener lights or LEDs do; any sound that occurred; and the current door position. Mention a trapped vehicle, broken spring, loose cable, or off-track roller so the visit can be prepared safely.
